Phase 2
Phase Two – Making The Forest Library
Once written the story makers were then invited to illustrate the stories. Sometimes the illustrating became a group collaborative task because of time restraints. The images—sketches, paintings, collages— were scanned and combined with the text into a hand printed book format, then hand bound. Each of the authors were given a copy to keep and an additional copy was made for the Forest Library.
Once completed there was usually a small book giving ‘ceremony’ where the books were shared and read, and the Lost Museum of Trees challenge was set.
It is here that participants were asked to give something back to the forest as a token of gratitude and respect for the abundance of gifts that we take and receive from the forest.
Giving back or Reciprocity has been an important ingredient in the Lost Museum of Trees. The stories themselves were part of a reciprocal cycle – by being gifts to the story maker, the forest library and the audience that receives the story. The experience of the story workshop then inspires the audience to reconnect and give back something to the forest.
